Wellness seems to be a word coined in recent years, but it has its roots dating back to the ancient years. While many organizations explain it differently, the main crux of the whole theme is directly related to maintaining a healthy, happy lifestyle that contributes to your personal growth in a positive way.

So what is the proper definition of wellness?

Wellness can be defined as a pursuit in which the person follows a variety of activities and lifestyles so that they can achieve a holistic state of health that allows them to thrive in their life.

Wellness and the multidimensional concepts it put forward

The definition of wellness might point you in the direction that wellness is just associated with physical health. But it isn’t. Wellness, in fact, is a multidimensional concept that needs to be understood in depth for you to get the full essence of it.

Most models of wellness put forward at least 6 models/dimensions. In some cases, it can go up to 12. Here are the basic six concepts associated with wellness:

The physical aspect

The physical aspect of wellness is the one that’s often talked about. It’s all about maintaining a healthy body so that you can be at your best. Wellness relating to physical health involves nourishing your body with essential nutrients, getting proper sleep, and exercising to keep it sound and healthy.

The intellectual aspect

The mental aspect of wellness involves engaging in creative and critical thinking activities that help you grow mentally. Nourishing and challenging your brain is vital for its growth. For that, a person needs to indulge in mentally challenging activities or conversations that make them wise.

The emotional aspect

Achieving wellness involves agreeing to the fact that a human being by nature is an emotional being. One needs to accept one’s own feelings and consider others’ feelings as well. Being compassionate and considerate is a sign that you are one step close to achieving wellness in your life.

The spiritual aspect

The spiritual aspect is all about finding a purpose for one’s existence and believing that human beings have a higher calling than just surviving. The spiritual journey starts when a person comes into agreement with this fact and starts their journey to find their higher calling.

The social aspect

Human beings are social beings, and therefore, the social aspect is important for their existence.

Achieving wellness in the social aspect is all about engaging and connecting with people and finding meaning in the conversations. It also involves engaging with the community and giving back to it, which helps nourish them socially.

The environmental aspect

The environmental aspect is all about understanding that we need to support our planet just the way it supports us.

Our actions have consequences, and therefore, to achieve wellness in the environmental aspect, one needs to be mindful of their actions. It involves making choices that have a lesser impact on the earth and choosing to live a sustainable, peaceful life.

In short, proper wellness is achieved when a person chooses to thrive in their life instead of just surviving it. It involves discovering one’s best self and choosing to thrive in their life.
